The concept of progress has a long history in philosophy. In anthropology, it was controversial and largely ignored for the longest time, despite early attempts to use it in a comparative perspective. With the ethical turn in anthropology, the question of moral progress has come into focus. The connection between moral, scientific, and technological progress deserves more attention, however.
