Attention
摘要
A place to begin is with Simone Weil. Weil says that it is not the will and wilfulness which lead to moral improvement. Instead, the possibility of moral change is intimately connected to the quality of attention paid to the reality of what surrounds us. Attention is a form of awareness and of disciplined and obligatory practice that Weil (2021) conceives of as unselfing, or ‘décréation’: denying the self, emptying it of its false divinity; not seeing oneself as the centre of the universe because all points are centres equally. (According to Weil—the Jew turned Christian—there is a ‘true’ centre, but it is outside the world, in Divinity.) To ‘consent’ to one’s unselfing, Weil concludes, is another word for love.
