Social anthropology as a discipline is founded upon the idea that those who pursue it professionally know something about the world that others do not. Inherent, therefore, within the very definition of anthropology is a truth claim or even multiple truth claims: (1) that reality exists; (2) that it is possible for it to be accessed by the observer; (3) that anthropologists are particularly good at doing so in their own chosen personal area or areas of study; and (4) that anthropology as a discipline more generally consists of an approach that facilitates such an inquiry. However, the way that this understanding is anthropologically expressed or understood may differ, both over time and between different practitioners.
