How and where common-sense features in our theorising provides a valuable clue as to what we think the task of anthropology is. Here I review two approaches. The first sees the making of common-sense claims as a conservative, culturally homogenising power that husbands shared knowledge; in contrast, the second views our arrival at moments of common-sense judgement as innovative and potentially humanising. The first I will call Common-sense I and the second, Common-sense II.
