Introduction: A Philosophy of Anthropology

What is the coherency of Anthropology as a discipline? Essentially it is the study of human being: of the human condition, human nature, humankind as a species. This then becomes subdivided, as knowledge grows, into different specialisms: social anthropology, cultural anthropology, psychological anthropology, biological anthropology, evolutionary anthropology, forensic anthropology, ecological anthropology, existential anthropology, cosmopolitan anthropology, and so on. Drawing on contributions from anthropologists whose specialisms lie in the social-scientific rather than natural-scientific sections of the above division, Anthropology’s Philosophy intends two things:
