The chapter on end-of-life care focuses on important aspects of caring for families of dying intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Mainly, this chapter discusses the symptom burden experienced by ICU families as they transition from intervention to end-of-life care, along with practical interventions to help alleviate families’ symptom burden. It provides suggestions on how best to support families who are in conflict during end-of-life decision-making. It discusses strategies that help families prepare for and cope during the transition where the patient is actively dying. Finally, issues affecting end-of-life care of families of underrepresented and LGBTQ+ populations are examined.
