How to Use Reflective Practice to Maximize Learning
摘要
In reflective practice, we take an intentional pause before, during, or after a clinical encounter to improve self-awareness and medical practice. Inward reflection can be divided into the three domains of cognitive awareness (awareness of what we know and don’t know), procedural skill (technical skills that we have and those we need to develop), and affective practice (how our work life and relationships affect our emotions and the impact this has on our practice). Outward reflection includes consideration of the medical, social, and systemic influences on patient care. Adopting a reflective practice helps us optimize our learning, clinical practice, and professional development. It is included in medical student Core Entrustable Professional Activities for Entering Residency (EPAs) and resident milestones. This chapter provides specific techniques to encourage reflective practice in learners in order to foster their ability to improve their future practice as clinicians.
