Teach effectively in the Emergency Department (ED) by leveraging the challenges of the ED environment to create opportunities for learning. Set expectations and establish a safe space for learners each shift. Expect interruptions and embrace a strategy of adaptability and “planned spontaneity” in teaching. Harness the unpredictable, undifferentiated presentations of illness to help learners become more comfortable with uncertainty and broaden their differential diagnoses. Provide feedback that is timely, focused, and learner-centered. Finally, take advantage of communication with consultants and staff to teach effective consultation and safe transitions of care.
