Everyone is subject to their own unconscious biases. This influences interactions with learners and how they are assessed. Bias leads to inequity in learning opportunities, grading, and written evaluations. These inequities are compounded further by biased language in narrative assessments and letters of recommendation, which may limit professional opportunities, especially for students who are women and underrepresented in medicine (URIM). In this chapter, we will review tips for educators on how to minimize bias in narrative evaluations and letters of recommendation.

摘要

Everyone is subject to their own unconscious biases. This influences interactions with learners and how they are assessed. Bias leads to inequity in learning opportunities, grading, and written evaluations. These inequities are compounded further by biased language in narrative assessments and letters of recommendation, which may limit professional opportunities, especially for students who are women and underrepresented in medicine (URIM). In this chapter, we will review tips for educators on how to minimize bias in narrative evaluations and letters of recommendation.
