Critical Review of Implementation of Waste Glass Towards Sustainable Construction Practices

With recent studies and statistics, a considerable quantity of waste glass is generated worldwide annually, but a partial proportion of the same has been employed for reutilizing purpose. The injunction of waste glass in concrete had shown a workable relationship with concrete under solid waste management due to its dominating application in the construction – based sector. Nevertheless, the influence of waste glass on properties of composite concrete had not assented yet. The earlier studies conducted, concluded their findings in both sides; showcasing the positive as well as adverse consequences on the characteristics of composite concrete. This inconsistency in the results of blending of waste glass into concrete mixing process hinders rate of acceptance of consumption of it in composite concrete manufacturing processes. This review tends towards presenting a consolidated review of the studies conducted by various research organizations and proposing fresh perspectives based on the type of waste glass used and their underlying mechanisms. Also, it is an attempt to develop a knowledge base towards employment of waste glass in the production of composite concrete and how its related properties in both states got affected; with an insightful conclusion on durable properties. Keeping in view of future research requirements and scope, this study may prove to be beneficial in adopting waste glass in manufacturing of concrete for durable and sustainable concrete mix.
