In its classical definition, policing can be defined as assisting those who cannot care for themselves, ‘the intoxicated, the addicted, the mentally ill, the physically disabled, the old, and the young’; resolving ‘conflict’, whether it be between individuals, groups or individuals or individuals and their government; identifying ‘problems’ that have the potential for becoming more serious problems; and creating and maintaining a feeling of ‘security’ in communities. As we can see, the functions and activities of the police are more wide-ranging than responding to reported crimes. The police are a large, bureaucratic, organisation, and the way it is organised is an important influence on how it works. The police are authoritative figures. The police are a social group in society. They are a subculture with a distinct set of attitudes and values. Sometimes, this is known as ‘occupational culture’.
