Diarrhea is the second cause of mortality in children under the age of 5 and is also one of the main reasons for admitting a patient to a hospital. In most cases of diarrhea in children, the consequences are serious. This is why it is essential to evaluate dehydration and malnutrition right after they are admitted, although variations from case to case are likely to occur. Diarrheal infections can have many origins such as viral, bacterial, or parasitic origin. Damage to the intestinal epithelium and colon can be caused by an inflammatory reaction due to the cytotoxicity of Shigella spp., Campylobacter spp., Salmonella spp., Yersinia spp., Bacteroides fragilis, and Clostridium difficile, among others. However, there are cases of chronic diarrhea that are not associated with infection caused by microorganisms but with other causes including functional disorders. The diarrheal process can last several days, and the symptoms will vary. The treatment will depend on the cause and the progress of the disease. However, there are several options to effectively treat diarrhea and even physical therapy alternatives that have been shown to accelerate and facilitate the process, mainly in those cases with functional etiology.
