There are multiple manifestations that cause various defecation disturbances. The most important are constipation and diarrhea, which are contemplated in other chapters. In this chapter, we will discuss obstructive defecation syndrome, which consists of the difficulty and impossibility of satisfactorily evacuating the rectum, maintaining the normal defecatory desire in some patients, but lacking it in others. This syndrome includes several pathophysiological forms. However, in this chapter, we will deal only with the two most relevant, which are defecatory dyssynergia, also called anismus, and Hirschsprung’s disease.
