Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) around the world prioritize the development of sustainability. Utilizing Large amounts of environmental resources, accounting for a large portion of non-renewable energy depletion, greenhouse gas emissions, raw materials use, waste generation, freshwater consumption, etc., shows the significance of implementing smart and sustainable operations in HEIs. The Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) is a well-known strategic planning tool for higher education institutions, examining curriculum, research, campus operations, planning, and capacity to promote cross-sector dialogue and learning. This study aims to reveal smart and sustainable operations that could be included in the sustainability assessment framework of HEIs regarding the operations area of the STARS 3.0 tool through a literature review. The findings provide smart and sustainable operations dimensions for HEIs.
