Social Protests and News Discourse: Stories We Live by
摘要
This chapter analyses news discourse on protest to identify the “stories we live by” when it comes to protest news. A sample of 30 news articles was selected using the Google News search application. On the advanced Google News search platform, the keyword “protest” was used to source the top news articles. Since the study is based on the Indian context, news stories related to protests in India were sampled. Based on a discourse analysis, seven “stories we live by” were identified and described: Protest upsets the people. Resolve it! Stern actions when the protest turns violent, Face escalation if demands aren’t met! Politicise the protest! Mass suicide threat as a protest tactic, Protest legitimation through demand justification and Gendering the protest. Using these social models of protest advocated in the text analysed, the news discourse on protest is characterised and their implications are discussed.
