Conflicts are the staple desiderata of communication media. They are the core value of market place media to make profits. Conflicts are historically civilisational phenomena. Every conflict involves one type of violence or the other, ranging from physical to mental, locational to intellectual, necessitating various measures to mitigate them. In a socio-political system, power elites make use of the conflicts and generate not-so-effective solutions to further their hegemonic intentions. They use mass media to entrap the gullible masses and hoodwink them. The subalterns fall prey to the power machinations and manipulations and remain disempowered. The Indian media, often the target of critical analyses, have devised their own parameters for reporting and commenting on conflicts. Gandhiji, an opinion journalist, was against all types of conflicts, both in public and personal spheres and advocated non-violence for resolution of conflicts. The history of struggle for Indian Independence is a grand testimony to his approach. However, the existing media ecology in India is different. The chapter presented here dissects the paradoxical determinants adopted by Indian media, to frame conflicts for audience consumption, through a qualitative analysis of media fare related to major socio-political issues and events and emphasises the need to play down conflicts in the society.

摘要
