2023 India-Canada Row: A Murder, Media Radicalisation, Political Play and Diplomatic Drift
摘要
Analysing a sample of online news articles from The Globe and Mail and The Times of India on the India-Canada conflict that “deteriorated” over the 2023 murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, popularly termed a “Pro-Khalistan” leader, this chapter identifies regressive themes in the news discourse. A Reflexive Thematic Analysis was used to qualitatively code the news text, identify concepts and categorise them to form discursive themes. Broadly, the analysis led to the formation of three broad themes, where news reports were found to politicise the issue, radicalise the stakeholders on religious and ideological lines and establish a diplomatic divide, perhaps to cash in on the conflict situation through media sensationalism.
