When it comes to conflict coverage, what do we prefer anyway? Straightforward-insipid “factual” news reporting that appears a tad detached—aiming for objectivity and occasional balance—or the flashy-aggressive invasive journalism that exhibits urgency, embraces populism, is intentionally opinionated—perhaps, taking a firm stance or side—and as entertaining as informative with lurid language, dramatic presentation and imbrued imagery? Cultivated in a climate of sensationalism, hypercriticality has become the new(s) normal and the news audience has also developed a diurnal appetite for shock-and-awe broadcasts. This edited volume combines critical studies of conflict news discourses and social media exchanges to discuss the underlying social, political and economic ideologies and power plays. Several theoretical frameworks, such as media framing and critical discourse analysis, investigate how assorted Indian conflicts are played out in the (mass, new and social) mediascape. This introductory chapter offers an overview of the book parts and the chapters it binds together.
