Youth radicalization to violent extremism is a growing concern for governments and communities worldwide, as it poses a significant threat to their wellbeing, social stability, and national security. Addressing this issue requires a holistic approach drawing on knowledge and experience from child soldier demobilization, child grooming and sexual exploitation and child protection models. Responses must incorporate trained specialists to provide direct interventions, awareness, and education for the youth services sector, engaging peers, and providing support for parents and caregivers. This chapter proposes a youth-centred framework for countering radicalization to violent extremism that builds on the lessons learned from programs already being delivered around the world. They recognize that young people who are radicalized to violent extremism are often victims of complex developmental, social, economic, and political factors that can be addressed through counseling and psychological support, vocational training, educational opportunities, and social connectedness. These interventions aim to address the underlying factors contributing to radicalization to violent extremism and help young people build healthy and fulfilling lives. The framework emphasizes the importance of involving peers and trusted intermediaries or mentors in countering radicalization. They can act as positive role models and provide social support to help young people navigate complex social and cultural issues. By implementing such a framework, governments and communities can help young people positively navigate the challenges that contribute to radicalization to violent extremism and promote a more peaceful and stable society.
