Reasons for large investment in metallurgical industries are given. Only well-trained and well-experienced persons shall operate the heavy machineries and systems for draining out molten metal and slag since these materials are at high temperatures. Electrolysis of Al2O3 shall be carried out safely and efficiently, and the product liquid aluminum shall be drained out carefully from the cell. SO2 gas is evolved during roasting of copper and zinc sulfide ores. Sulfuric acid is produced as a by-product from the pollution control facilities. Electrowinning is carried out for getting copper and zinc, while electrorefining is done for purification of crude metal. Blast furnace exit gases can be used as fuel for preheating the air (which is injected in the blast furnace). These gases must be handled very carefully and safely since they contain CO. Salient features of electric arc furnace and blast furnaces are also discussed. The matter written in this chapter is only to draw attention of the readers to the large investment required in metallurgical industries, various machineries required, safety precautions to be taken due to operations at high temperatures and evolution of gases (containing carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide), and facilities to be provided for environmental pollution control. I have referred to standard textbooks and have tried to provide some more information in these matters based on my experience of working in various industries.
