Challenges in STEM Teaching at Engineering Education

Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is an umbrella term used to group together the distinct but related technical disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. STEM education aims to prepare students with the skills needed in the twenty-first century, particularly in areas that require significant technological and scientific advances. This form of education emphasizes problem-solving skills, critical thinking and practical applications. A questionnaire survey was conducted on STEM education at Óbuda University, Hungary, to explore the place of STEM education at the university. The focus was on exploring university instructors’ knowledge and experience regarding STEM education, how open they are to further learning about different educational technologies, what results they have achieved using STEM-based teaching methods, and what tools they use for teaching STEM subjects. The student survey questions centred on student satisfaction with STEM education. The purpose of the survey was to determine how, if the respondents are satisfied with STEM teaching and learning, this type of educational practice can be further deepened in the future. The results indicated that both instructors and students are open to the multidisciplinary approach to STEM subjects. To achieve this, greater emphasis needs to be placed on the development of teaching methods for instructors, as well as the application of modern technological tools in education.
