In recent years, interest in re-envisioning engineering activities through the lens of an ethics of care has grown. At the same time, several US engineering societies revised the canons for their codes of ethics in ways that raise their commitments to sustainability. The intent of this chapter is to bring these parallel trajectories together and demonstrate the promise their intersection holds for enhancing the codes’ commitments to sustainability even further. Following a brief introduction, we look at the progress made with respect to these two trajectories before turning to the advantages of infusing engineering codes of ethics with the ethics of care. With this in mind, we offer some concrete suggestions for how the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) code might be revised. We then acknowledge and respond to possible objections before concluding with some directions for future research.

摘要
