Health Informatics (HI) is a multidisciplinary field that leverages information technology (IT) and data management to enhance healthcare delivery and patient outcomes. HI integrates people, processes, and technology to address the complexities of healthcare to foster collaboration across health providers. Therefore, it is health informaticists that have the background and experience to implement artificial intelligence (AI) solutions in the health care setting. They have medical knowledge and the technical proficiency in machine learning, data analysis, and software development neededed to develop, pilot, and implement AI tools. Therefore, it is important to understand the role of clinical informaticists and how they are at the forefront of AI application management. This chapter explores the evolution of the scope of HI, from its early beginnings in automating administrative tasks to the management of sophisticated electronic health records (EHRs) and data-driven technologies prevalent today. The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, passed in 2009 as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act accelerated EHR adoption in the United States requiring the growth of the HI field, to include clinical informaticists, health information managers, and data scientists. The chapter discusses certifications, educational pathways, and the expanding scope of practice for HI professionals, emphasizing their pivotal role in improving healthcare efficiency, effectiveness, and patient care through data management, analysis, and technological innovation.
