This article advocates for a student-centric approach in instructional design, proposing integrating user experience (UX) design principles into curricula development. This integration aims to enhance the effectiveness of curricula, particularly in the design of individual learning units (LUs). Traditionally, curricula are built using a top-down approach, prioritising stakeholder input and educational standards. However, this can lead to LUs obstructing student learning due to a disconnect between their intended purpose and student experience. The author proposes a method for evaluating LU quality based on student experience to address this. This method utilises student journey maps to assess how well the curriculum aligns with student expectations throughout their learning journey. By pinpointing areas where student needs aren’t being met, the journey maps reveal opportunities for improvement in curriculum design. The pilot study’s results suggest that the method can effectively identify areas for improvement, making it a valuable tool for educators to enhance their teaching practices. This practical application of UX design methodologies in instructional design significantly contributes to the field by demonstrating their value in improving the quality and effectiveness of curricula.
