Context: The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to systems that use interconnected devices to exchange data and provide services in different areas, such as smart cities and Industrial IoT. Problem: An open challenge in teaching IoT is promoting a curriculum that builds a bridge between academia and industry. Additionally, teaching IoT in the Global South higher education institutions brings an additional challenge due to structural and social issues. Methodology: This paper presents a hybrid intervention for teaching an IoT course combining Problem-Based Learning with Maker Culture. A case study evaluated the students’ perceptions concerning learning effectiveness and theory-practice integration. Results: Students noticed that the proposed intervention increased their interest and engagement and were satisfied with integrating theory and practice. Conclusions: Students felt better prepared for actual IoT challenges and satisfactorily assessed the quality of practical activities related to IoT during the course.
