Case-based learning is widely used for teaching in a single scientific domain but not very much elaborated and mature for interdisciplinary student teams. The main challenge is to design case studies which contain both domain specific, intradisciplinary research problems and elements which require interdisciplinary teamwork. Both aspects need to have a sufficient depth to be relevant in higher education and digital case elements integrated where possible to simulate a real-world context behind the case problems. For a realistic and complex learning setting, the case should be derived from real industrial problems which allows company cooperation and challenge-based learning approaches. As an interesting add-on, the cases should support the work in virtual cross-border projects which involves approaches used in Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) settings. Designing, validating, using, and evaluating such case studies requires an elaborated approach going beyond traditional case writing. In our contribution we present (1) the methodology of deriving the real, in-depth case studies supported by digital elements and (2) the guideline on writing-up such case studies, both validated by interviews with industry partner(s), academic experts, and students in (international) Master’s programmes in industrial engineering, informatics and business studies.
