Health-Oriented Fitness Depending on the BMI Index of 10-Year-Old Boys and Girls from Elementary School

In the study, the authors address the relationship between health-oriented physical fitness (Ruffier test, Beep test) and the body mass index (BMI) in a school population of boys and girls of a younger school age. The research was conducted on a sample of n = 247 boys and girls from elementary schools in the Upper Nitra region. They compared n = 119 boys and n = 128 girls. Boys and girls from elementary schools in the Upper Nitra region were divided into 4 groups based on the BMI index for the population of 10-year-old boys and girls in Slovakia according to Ševčíková et al., (2004) and compared their level of health-oriented fitness (Ruffier test index). They also assessed the body posture of boys and girls using the standardized method according to Thomas-Klein mod. Mayer (Bendíková, 2016). To determine the statistical significance of the samples, they used the Kruskal-Wallis H-test and Mann-Whitney U-test. They used Cohen’s d and r to evaluate the effect size and the difference in average values. By evaluating the results of the BMI index and health-oriented fitness depending on physical fitness and aerobic endurance of boys and girls from elementary schools in the Upper Nitra region, they found a significant decrease in physical fitness among boys and girls. As the BMI index increased, physical fitness (Ruffier test) decreased significantly by an average of 3.4 (index) (14.84%) in the observed group of boys and 4.03 (index) (15.86%) in the observed group of girls. Aerobic endurance (Beep test) also significantly decreased with increasing BMI index, with an average difference of 6.16 (number) (15.17%) in boys and a significant decrease of 4.26 (number) (13.69%) in girls. They also consider it concerning that only 25 boys (21%) had good body posture (Level 1 and Level 2), while 94 boys (79%) had incorrect body posture (Level 3 and Level 4). Good body posture (Level 1 and Level 2) was found in 22 girls (17.18%), while 106 girls (82.82%) had incorrect body posture (Level 3 and Level 4). Based on these findings, they consider the current state of the BMI index, health-oriented fitness (Ruffier test and Beep test), and body posture of boys and girls from elementary schools in the Upper Nitra region to be unsatisfactory and detrimental to health.
