Located on Shanghai-Ruili State Highway (G320), Guizhou Section, the Huayudong Bridge spans a National Reserve and a drinking water protection zone offering water for millions residents. To improve the traffic capacity, the old truss composite arch bridge with main span of 150m was removed and rebuilt into a half-through concrete-filled steel tubular basket-handle arch bridge with main span of 180m. Project initiated a construction method of relying old bridge to build new arch and using new arch to remove old bridge, while meet environmental protection requirements for reconstruction.
