Dalit theatre, though a less advanced genre in the context of Indian Dalit literature, uses the ideology of Dr B. R. Ambedkar to instil in its audience, primarily the Dalits, a radical mindset that calls for resistance to the hegemonic caste-based society and opposes the subordination of human beings on all grounds, including caste, class, gender, religion, race, and ethnicity. It aims to promote social equality by dismantling the fundamental assumptions of caste superiority and saving Dalits from the harsh grip of the caste system. With the help of this theatre, Dalits are moving closer to obtaining their rights to be treated as human beings. Given that it is performed on stage, it stands out more vividly to portray the Dalits’ terrible situation. By highlighting the pains and injustices inflicted upon the Dalits, Dalit theatre aims to become an important cultural endeavour in the battle against social injustices. As eminent Dalit thespian Professor K. A. Gunasekaran writes, “Dalit Theatre operates as a weapon for Dalit liberation. Since most of the Dalits who perform slave labour remain illiterates, drama serves as an appropriate medium to present the various pertinent views to educate the Dalit masses. Dalit Theatre is foregrounded as a symbol of cultural awareness of the Dalits”.
