Applying the Developmental Theory of Embodiment to Yoga
摘要
This chapter focuses on the practice of yoga and its potential contribution to positive embodiment, as informed by the Developmental Theory of Embodiment. Informed by feminist and social justice lenses, this integrated and intersectional theory delineates protective (and risk) factors in the physical and social environment that facilitates positive embodiment. The chapter describes ways for yoga studios and instructors to consider each of these factors towards the goal of creating a constructive class environment that promotes both collective social justice and positive embodiment among class participants. It also includes ideas that can help yoga practitioners engage in a yoga practice that enhances a sense of positive embodiment. Further research and the sharing of personal experiences in this area is needed to enhance the potential for yoga to enhance a positive experience of embodiment.
