Trauma-Informed Approaches in the Teaching of Yoga
摘要
This chapter details trauma-informed approaches to teaching yoga. Yoga, trauma, and posttraumatic stress disorder are defined. Next, the polyvagal theory is reviewed within the context of trauma and the mechanisms of change for application of yoga among those who have experienced trauma. Specific terminology and scope of practice issues are clarified including trauma-informed and responsive yoga, trauma-sensitive yoga, and yoga therapy. A table of specific practices is provided addressing safety, mindful awareness, communication and verbal cueing, psychoeducational content, modifications, physical assists, space considerations, cautions, and instructor qualifications. The research on trauma-informed and responsive yoga is reviewed and conclusions and future directions are offered.
