Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of death worldwide, and early diagnosis and screening have proven to be able to save lives. An effective screening test should have high accuracy, good patient compliance, and be virtually inexpensive. The analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in breath has been demonstrated to be able to differentiate between not only patients with colorectal cancer and healthy controls, but also patients with pre-cancerous lesions, such as adenomatous polyps, making breathomics a potential and effective tool for early diagnosis.
