The Netherlands has a long-standing pro-Atlanticist orientation, which in the post-Cold War era has gradually evolved within a dual-track foreign policy strategy, through which the Netherlands maintains close transatlantic relations while at the same time placing a strong focus on European cooperation. However, over the past decade, this dual-track strategy has come under pressure: from within the EU as Member States increasingly strive for more autonomy from the U.S.; and more recently also domestically, where the new right-wing government led by Prime Minister Dick Schoof has announced cuts in spending on diplomatic relations.
