Following conflict or environmental disaster, it is necessary to take immediate action to provide shelter for displaced people. Despite the difficulties of operating in the unexpected and ever-changing environment of a humanitarian crisis, well-planned programs with robust monitoring are constantly able to deliver within timetables and budgets. Planning and execution must start as soon as possible since responses to shelter, and settlements take time. Planning and coordination facilitated the building of refugee housing for 17,500 households in response to the large-scale displacement caused by military operations in Mosul, Iraq, in less than 6 months (Global Shelter Cluster 2021). Planning helps to predict risks that might emerge during the construction process. For fast delivery, contingency planning can be helpful to avoid risks and reduce execution time. During contingency planning, it is essential to identify environmental issues and concerns that might be necessary to design shelters and their camps. Furthermore, with the advent of computational and parametric design technologies, there is an opportunity to revolutionize the rapid delivery of refugee housing. This chapter will outline the planning process for fast and quality delivery of emergency shelters. It will also explore how computational and parametric design approaches can facilitate the creation of efficient, sustainable, and scalable refugee housing solutions to meet the urgent needs of displaced populations.
