Understanding change is an ongoing discussion in applied theatre literature. This chapter explores change by examining the concept questioning how different forms of change are possible. The three main areas of exploration include: a change of mind, change of heart and change of side. Major debates in the field are examined in this chapter to contextualise the gaps and possibilities to offer new insights into what might constitute and prohibit the sustainability of change for urban youth taking part in applied theatre projects. The chapter raises questions about the implications of applied theatre operating within the neoliberal world order and how we might begin to navigate the challenges this entails within a system to challenge barriers to change through our practice with inner-city youth.
