In this chapter, we introduce the concept of an effective Hamiltonian through two canonical examples, introduce the main questions answered in this dissertation work with relevant background both from the perspective of quantum tunneling and quantum information physics. We conclude with an outline for the rest of the dissertation document with a roadmap that highlights the logical connections between chapters.
