This chapter explores issues of uncertainty with respect to two types of concern when considering nuclear power safety and reliability. The first type of concern relates to a slowly growing issue during operations of the nuclear power plant. By analogy with medicine we refer to such a concern as 'chronic'. The second type of concern is more sudden, or 'acute'. It relates to uncertainty issues within a nuclear accident or lesser system failure.
