This chapter explores the role of uncertainty in the design and operation of engineered systems. The use of Safety Margins and Safety Factors is discussed. The importance of probability distributions for key parameters is introduced. The management of safety within engineering project teams is discussed in the light of very high levels of very high levels of project complexity. This challenge is mitigated by improvements in computational models and tools.
