Orphan Black, the ultimate clone show, uses the characters to explore the classic path not taken. Their struggle with their patriarchal creators evokes the suburban gothic, as they navigate through hidden threats. Many of the storylines involve facing the shadow, complicated not only by the same actress playing all the roles but by each character pretending to be the other at some point. Season one follows Sarah, the jobless, rootless criminal, masquerading as Beth the cop. Meanwhile, Alison the straight-laced homemaker and Cosima the free spirit join in the role switching. This season’s villain is Helena, a deranged murderer who nonetheless feels drawn to Sarah, her twin. The growing bond of sisterhood helps them all find acceptance and grow toward self-realisation.
