The concept of restorative justice aims to make communities safer and more cohesive by promoting safety, accountability, sustainability, relationship-building, and constructive involvement. As a component of a larger societal maintenance endeavor, the police are recognized as the law-enforcing agency carrying out the entire community’s responsibilities. Through restorative justice procedures, restorative policing actively assists victims, criminals, their families, and communities in finding constructive solutions to disputes. Reduced negative behavior and conflict are the main objectives of restorative policing, which is accomplished by encouraging community and governmental resource participation. Restorative procedures, which bring the victims into contact with the criminals that ultimately should not be there, have been overtaken by the obvious evidence of police activity. Considering the introduction of new Criminal laws in India on July 1st, 2024, where police discretion has been widened in investigation, it is imperative to discuss the necessary requisites for the police to imbibe the concept of restorative policing. The introduction of community service as a new method of punishment in the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita proves strongly the restorative approach of the India Criminal Justice policy. This paper attempts to find the general awareness of police officers and the public when it comes to restorative policing in the capital city of Bhubaneshwar in Odisha.
