Climate Change and Agriculture: Mitigation, Adaptation and Resilience in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State

Undoubtedly, climate change is a global issue that impacts all aspects of human life today. The review evaluated the effect of climate change on agricultural production, mitigation, adaptation and resilience in Ebonyi state. Previous studies on climate change and agriculture concentrated on adaptation alone, mitigation alone, some on mitigation and adaptation, while others are on adaptation and resilience and are published more in international journals. However, there are very few studies on climate change and agriculture: mitigation, adaptation and resilience in Abakaliki, Ebonyi state, hence the need for the study. Reviewing the mitigation, adaptation, and resilience of climate change and agriculture in Abakaliki, Ebonyi state, was the goal of the study. From the initial search of 100 journal papers, only 51 met the inclusion criteria using PRISMA procedures. 51 research papers that included information on agriculture and climate change, mitigation, adaptation, and resilience, and were published in local and international journals between 2013 and 2023, were systematically reviewed. The review identified the effects of climate change to include that amount of CO2 and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere has increased globally, which has increased the average world temperature and caused unpredictable weather patterns. Climate change has also shown several effects on agriculture and food production. Through changes in agro-ecological conditions, it directly affects food production. It also influences the increase and distribution of earnings, which in turn determines the demand for agricultural products. Given the blatantly evident detrimental effects of climate change on agriculture, mitigation, adaptation and resilient measures are required. The results also identified that most of the papers were published in international journals. The review observed the need for more information on adaptation and resilience in the study area since the effect of climate change is persisting and should be published locally.
