Accounting for Climate Change and Value of Listed Oil and Gas Firms in Nigeria
摘要
The stakeholders’ theory presupposes that balancing the interests of all stakeholders with respect to corporate reporting offers a better strategy for driving a successful organization. This study attempted to align with stakeholders’ theory as it evaluates the influence of climate change accounting on corporate value of firms in the oil and gas sector of Nigeria. Secondary data were collected from the financial reports of eight listed firms in Nigerian Exchange Group from 2013 to 2022 and content analysis technique was employed to obtain data for climate change disclosures with the aid of Global Reporting Initiative on emissions reporting. The autoregressive distributed lag method was employed in the testing of hypothesis and findings show that climate change disclosure has significant and positive effect on the firm’s value at the long run. Thus, the study concluded that climate change disclosure is an important factor that addresses the interests of other non-financial stakeholders to oil and gas companies in Nigeria. It therefore recommended that companies in the sector should pay more attention to preventive and remedial environmentally responsible activities and disclose them in their financial reports.
