Application of Blockchain Technology in Carbon Footprint Traceability and Carbon Credit in the Animal Industry
摘要
Reducing carbon emissions by tracing the carbon footprint in animal and agri-food products is critical in the face of climate change. To do so, we must first be able to calculate the carbon footprint in agri-food, animals and their products. The carbon footprint should then be recorded in an immutable, reliable, transparent, and non-changeable manner. There are several methods for calculating the carbon footprint. Among these, the use of blockchain technology is a novel approach that is not well understood. In this letter, we provided an overview of blockchain technology and assessed the feasibility of using it to track carbon footprints in order to plan strategies to mitigate the effects of rising carbon emissions. We also clarified the distinction between a carbon footprint and a carbon credit and highlighted the applicability of blockchain technology may be used in both cases. Finally, future research will investigate the extent to which blockchain contributes to carbon footprint and the extent to which blockchain technology might aid in carbon footprint traceability.
