The metaphor “landscape as text” stands for interpretative approaches in human geography that make it possible to understand non-linguistic areas such as architecture, landscape, design, etc., as texts/sign systems that can be written and read. This requires not only a constructivist understanding of landscape but also an expanded understanding of culture and text as it was conceived in the context of the cultural turns. Early semiotic approaches focused on landscape as a closed representational system, which was decoded according to the messages intended by the authors. Under the increasing influence of poststructuralism, the research focus has turned to the ambiguity and transience of attributions of meaning, as well as everyday practices of attribution (i.e., the performative aspects). This increasing complexity and differentiation of the approach is met by a rather controversial expansion of the understanding of text towards “textuality of landscape”.
