Postmodern urban developments have been scrutinized for about three decades. These discussions focus primarily on the ‘network structure’ of postmodern urban spaces. However, the present contribution deals with currently rather gradual developments of settlements. The focus is on urban rural hybrid developments, which refer to different mixtures of urban and rural as well as natural and cultural developments and structures. These can be understood as different compartments of spatial pastiches. An example of these urban rural hybrid compartments in the spatial pastiche are urbanizing former suburbs—formerly suburban spaces that are being urbanized in different functional, social and structural ways.
