The conflicts surrounding those physical spaces that are socially interpreted as ‘landscape’ are as numerous and ambiguous as the term ‘landscape’ itself: Often, such conflicts manifest different claims, inscriptions, and interpretations of what can or should be viewed as ‘landscape’. There have been corresponding landscape conflicts in the past, and currently, they usually conflagrate because of the divergence between novel uses or claims of use and familiar landscape expectations. Notably characteristic are the aestheticization and moralization of corresponding discourses and conflicts which complicate potential conflict resolution.
