The current epoch, referred to as ‘postmodern’, exhibits characteristics that resemble those of the epoch of ‘Romanticism’ and in some ways ‘inherit’ them. These include an emotional turn towards the planet, the acceptance of ambiguity, doubts about a rational worldview, the rediscovery of the sublime, a longing for the infinite and absolute that transcends finiteness, and utopian visions of world improvement. These characteristics are also found in landscape constructions, interpretations, and evaluations, especially in art, but also in everyday life, politics, and the sciences. Typical effects of Romantic landscape interpretations are specific essentialist notions of home, sustainability, and nature conservation, as well as the historically oblivious upgrading of old industrial ruins, ‘wild vegetation’, and a ‘nature-culture syntheses’.
