While ‘morality’ describes a system of rules and values determining human action, ‘ethics’ is understood as the reflection of morality. Landscape is also a focus of moral judgments. In particular, the alteration of the material foundations of landscape is subject to negative moral evaluations. The problem with such evaluations lies in the fact that they make difficult a factual discussion about such changes. Ethical reflection on such evaluations can clarify the specific reasoning and mechanism used in these evaluations and moralizing judgments, reveal concealed or hidden normative prerequisites of such judgments, and call into question of their capacity for generalization. Overall, ethics in this sense can also contribute to discerning facts in morally charged discussions involving landscape changes.
