Throughout history the German concept of Heimat (‘home,’ ‘homeland,’ ‘home environment’) has enjoyed recurrent vogue—as it did at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Whether depoliticized or politicized, the term is associated with many controversies. As a social construct, it is strongly anchored in everyday life, especially through its close connection to landscape. In times of globalization and postmodernism, normal (or normative) home-landscapes provide stability and in some cases trigger considerable resistance to change. This article examines and discusses the relationship between landscape and Heimat.
