In the modern cultural and social history of death, landscape formations and individual landscape elements have increasingly gained importance. Classic examples are the grave in the landscape garden and the park cemeteries. In the current variants of natural burial, landscape itself becomes the burial site. Extreme landscapes such as the seacoast and mountains have become the scenes of a—formerly religiously shaped—memory culture. With the roadside accident memorials, death, mourning and remembrance unfold in the traffic landscapes of late modernity.
